All The Evil – My Dystopian Obsession

All the evil NAMED-01

I would never have said I was a fan of science fiction – it’s always seemed geeky and fantastical to me, and I like to think of myself as a realist. So it was a bit of a revelation when I realised I was obsessed with post-apocalytic fiction and have been for some time. I think we all have, without knowing it…

It used to be an obsession with an utopian future – in the 1980s the future seemed so bright and full of technological marvels. Proof of this can be seen in Back to the Future – their shiny colourful future was our now. But where are the real hoverboards and 3D holographic movie posters?! It’s all a bit of a disappointment for children of the 80s…

So now we are obsessed with dystopia. These days we have much lower hopes for the future of the human race. We are killing our planet and each other at such a rate, that no one can argue that it’s not going to end well.

Dystopian fiction is everywhere, and I personally can’t get enough (of the good stuff). My most recent read, and one of my favourites, is The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey. I won’t tell you the plot as it’s too good to spoil, but it features a lot of zombies and a badass little girl called Melanie.

Melanie and her friends are the inspiration for my Halloween themed illustration ‘All The Evil’. I have a day or so to kill so decided to indulge myself with a bit of graphic zombie horror.

Happy Halloween guys. Don’t have nightmares…
